Saint Nicholas to Visit Ascension Students Today

Amarillo, TX- Ascension Academy parents refuse to give into the holiday blues despite the frightful weather and treacherous travel conditions.  Today, parents of Ascension students will orchestrate a visit from Saint Nicholas at approximately 1:30 p.m. outside Ascension classrooms.

St. Nicholas is the patron saint of children, and this is Ascension’s fourth year to celebrate St. Nicholas Day.  In the European civilization’s early history (at the end of the third century and especially in Scandinavian countries), children began to leave their shoes outside their doorway on December 6 in hopes St. Nicholas would pay them a visit and fill their shoes with gifts.  The St. Nicholas Day tradition eventually gave way to Santa Clause.

At Ascension, Parents of Ascension Academy (PAA) celebrate by having students leave their shoes outside their Bell 7 classrooms.  Members of PAA then fill their shoes with candies and gifts.

“We love to celebrate St. Nicholas Day with our kids.  It’s a great time, right before finals, to bless our kids with the tradition of this patron saint,” said PAA Booster Club Treasurer Regina Paquette.
