Athletics

The major goal of an interscholastic athletic program is the same as for any other educational program – to provide youth with the opportunity to develop to their maximum potential.   Ascension’s program provides for development of physical and mental skills through competitive athletics, enhancing students’ personal and social confidence and skills. Competitive athletics can generate a pride in achievement; an appreciation of team effort, hard work, and fair play; respect for rules of the game; and respect for the abilities of others. It should be noted that participation in athletic activities is a PRIVILEGE offered to and earned by students.

The athletic program at Ascension is designed to serve two different but complementary needs: the opportunity to learn a sport and participate in team play, and the chance to test one’s abilities against other athletes in interscholastic competition.   The school’s middle school sports programs address this first need, while the high school program exposes athletes to the challenges of regular season and tournament play against some of the finest I-A and II-A teams in Texas.

Coaches at Ascension are men and women who have a great influence on their students. As a professional educator, the coach is expected to set high standards and serve as a model for young people.   In cooperation with parents the coach provides the kind of constructive leadership intended to inspire the very best of team play and sportsmanship.
