Russell C. Long, PhD

Dr. Russell C. Long is a current member of the Board of Regents of Ascension Academy. He serves on the Steering Committee as well as the Development Committee for the School.

Dr. Long brings a wealth of experience in education to the Board. After working as a professor for New Mexico State University, the Schreiner Institute in Stephenville, Texas, and Tarleton State University in Stephenville, he moved his career to West Texas A&M University as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1992. In 1994, Long was appointed Interim President of WTAMU and then President and CEO of the University. He retired from WTAMU in 2005, and the University named him President Emeritus in 2006. Since his retirement, Dr. Long has served as Interim President for Ascension Academy and Interim Provost for Midwestern State University.

During his illustrious career he has received numerous awards and recognition for his professional activities. Tarleton State University named him Distinguished Professor in 2001. Sul Ross State University named Dr. Long Distinguished Alumni in 2000. He was also honored with the College of Liberal Arts Silver Anniversary Outstanding Graduate award from Texas A&M University in 1995. 

In addition, Dr. Long has held several distinguished titles for his service during his career. He served as President of the Association of Texas Colleges and Universities in 2004. From 1999-2005 he served as Commissioner for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Finally, in 1993 he served on the Governor’s Executive Development Program. 

Dr. Long holds a B.S. in English Literature from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas; an M.A. in English Literature from New Mexico State University; and a PH.D. in English Literature from Texas A&M University in College Station.

At this time, Dr. Long is retired and lives in Amarillo with his lovely wife, Natrelle.
