Education is for improving the lives of others and for
leaving your community and world better than you found it.

The Texas Panhandle's only private college preparatory school for students in grades 6 through 12
Joining Ascension Academy in Fall 2018, Mykel Byersmith has enjoyed a well-varied musical landscape in his lifetime. The salutatorian of his high school class (Vernon High School, 2010), he started private piano study at the age of five. This led to a Bachelor’s in Church Music (Piano Emphasis) from Baylor University in 2014. He started playing the tuba as he entered sixth grade; this led to two ATSSB All-State Band appearances (2009 & 2010). Mykel was involved for three years in the Baylor University Golden Wave Marching Band; he also plays the guitar and organ.
Mykel started singing at a very young age and was always an active singer in his church. As a chorister, he had the opportunity to sing at the Washington National Cathedral and was Amahl in Amahl and the Night Visitors. In high school, Mykel was an active vocalist in his church’s praise team, Veritas. This led to continued involvement in choirs at Baylor University (Men’s Choir) and St. Jerome’s Catholic Church in Waco. After his college graduation, Mykel had the great privilege to study as an apprentice for one year under Jim Gardner, who currently resides as the Music Director at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.
Upon completing his apprenticeship, Mykel went on to complete his Master’s in Music in Performance (Choral Conducting Emphasis) at West Texas A&M University in May 2017. During these years, Mykel became the Music Director at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Canyon, Texas, and he even finished his first singer/songwriter album, Two Paths: One Choice. In his free time, Mykel loves to read, compose music, and watch a well-written television show or movie.
