Language Department Chair
Mr. Martin, an Amarillo native, earned a B.A. in Classics and English and an M.A. in Secondary Education from Austin College. He came to Ascension from a 20 year stint at Van Alstyne High School in Van Alstyne, Texas, during which time he served as Chair of both the English and Foreign Language departments. While there, he taught Latin I through AP Latin IV as well as AP English III and IV. Prior to Van Alstyne, he taught English, Latin, and Humanities at the Glenwood School in Richardson, TX
Mr. Martin received a Fulbright Fellowship for Classical Studies at the American Academy in Rome in 1996 and was honored with the Summa Cum Laude Master Teacher Award from the National Junior Classical League in 2002. He has served four times as a reader and most recently as a table leader for the grading of the Advanced Placement Latin examination offered by the College Board. In 1999 and 2005 he attended workshops and seminars offered through the National Endowment for the Humanities. He served as State Chair for the Texas State Junior Classical League from 1999 to 2008. He currently serves as President of the Texas Classical Association.
Here at Ascension Academy he teaches Latin I, II, III, and IV/V as well as AP Latin. Additionally he serves as the sponsor for the Junior Classical League competitions and as the coach for the TAPPS Literary Criticism team. He enjoys having too much coffee, too many books and too many guitars.
