...And Here We Go!

Greetings from Ascension Academy!

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! I’m excited to kick off our new blog series for the academic year. I would like to start by sharing how thrilled I am to be part of the Ascension Academy community. My wife and I are galvanized by the mission statement of Ascension, and we are here to live out that mission on a daily basis. I can think of little that is more exciting than preparing young men and women for college and maximizing their potential!

It would be an understatement to say that transitioning in a pandemic has been an adventure. My family and I have embraced Amarillo, and the enjoyment of our re-entry to West Texas has been helped by the kind welcome from so many faculty, students, parents, and members of the community at large. Your hospitality has taken a potentially difficult situation and turned it into a smooth landing, or as smooth as possible in these circumstances!

The community of our school is also worth mentioning in this unusual time. I have truly enjoyed getting to know students over the past few weeks. As I walk through the Cafetorium at lunch, it is clear to me that our students enjoy being back in school after such a long break. I have also been deeply moved by the commitment of our faculty as they have continually illustrated flexibility and a willingness to adapt to the needs of our students this school year. The continued support of parents has helped me smile every day as Ascension strives to shift challenges into opportunities for our students. To the entire Ascension community, I want to thank you for making my job easier in this crazy time.

I also want to share some reflections as a new parent, Class of 2026, in this time of COVID. After five months away from the structure and challenge of school, sports, activities, and interactions with peers, the quarantine took its toll on our students. There is a mental toll that comes with what has become a near-constant bombardment of negativity along with the adjustments we’ve all had to make in our daily lives. Please take the time to talk with your son and daughter; remind them that Ascension Academy is a place where they are valued as an individual and that it is okay to have an off day. We are committed to supporting and listening to our students to ensure that they are managing the expectations of school with the reality of living in a pandemic. To help ease their concern, you have my commitment that we will do everything possible to maintain the safest environment possible for our students and faculty.

In The Cardinal Connection in the coming months, you will hear from other voices at our school as we examine our life at Ascension Academy. This will be a well-rounded cross-section of subjects that directly impact our school community, and each blog will highlight a topic that illustrates who we are and tells the story of Ascension Academy. You will be able to find this blog on our website, in parent eNewsletters, and on our social media platforms. I look forward to reading along with you as we share our passion and community!
