DR. WILLIAM SUMMERHILL
Head of School
Dr. Summerhill became Ascension’s Head of School in July 2008 following a twenty-two-year career at Wyoming Seminary College Prep School in Kingston, PA. During that time he served as Academic Dean, Director of Studies, Senior Chaplain, a teacher in both the history and English departments, dorm proctor and softball coach. At Ascension he reports to the Board of Regents, being responsible for the overall academic program and financial operation of the school.
A life-long student with a passion for both religion and science, Dr. Summerhill earned a B.A. in biology from Shippensburg State University followed by a Master of Divinity Degree from Wesley Theological Seminary before completing studies pursuant to an M. A. and Ph. D. at the Catholic University of America. He is an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church, having served as pastor, youth minister and choir director in churches in Rockville, MD, and Roxbury, PA. He also enjoyed working with senior citizens while he was chaplain and director of public relations at the Quincy United Methodist Home in southern Pennsylvania.
Dr. Summerhill and his wife Patti (who teaches at Ascension) have two grown children living in Denver and in Guam, and they are blessed with five grandchildren. Bill and Patti are members of the Polk Street United Methodist Church where he sings in the adult choir and regularly teaches several adult Sunday school classes. An avid supporter of the musical arts, Bill and Patti are regular participants in the Panhandle cultural scene. He is also a volunteer member of the Board of Managers in the Greenways neighborhood.
